Jamie and Hazel

This is Jamie and Hazel from Danielle Corsetto’s awesome comic Girls With Slingshots. I love the comic, and there’s no flattery quite like fan art.

She can kill you with her eyebrows.

I recently signed on as a freelance illustrator at elance.com and this was the first of two jobs that I bid on and won. The client wanted an illustration of herself in a stately den, sipping brandy with the ghost of Leona Helmsley. Immediately, I imagined Leona’s furry eyebrows framing her snarky face, enticing the viewers to join, while at the same time making them aware of her clear superiority to them.

I had a great time designing and illustrating this project, and my thanks go out to the client and to elance.com for making this all come together. I dare say I think I have a future in freelance illustration!

This was a fantastic job and I had a lot of fun doing it. I hope to be able to work on similar projects again in the future.

I happened across an art jam on deviantArt last night and I really wanted to get in on it. The deadline is today, so I stayed up until 3 am just to get it finished. Whether or not it gets into the art jam doesn’t matter. I’m just stoked that I managed to create a new illustration so soon after the last one!

I think I might just be getting over this creative lull.

Dean and Hank Venture

I drew a sketch of the Venture boys a long time ago, back when I didn’t seem to be quite so apathetic about drawing. Now that I’m done with my college education I want to get back into drawing again. I think drawing a fan illustration of the titular characters from one of my most favorite shows ever is a good place to start.

Pandemics are funny!

This was my response to the media’s poor handling of the H1N1 influenza A thing going on right now. I think Randall’s comic sums it up a little better though. Also, this comic would have been much more relevant last Friday.

Jesus told me to hate you.

Religious fundamentalists make me angry. It’s not enough that the religion of Christianity dominates in Western society, but here in the United States, many Christians insist on playing the victim card. Their argument goes something like this:

If hate crime legislation passes, then we could be arrested for expressing our religious beliefs.

What they neglect to add is just what those expressions of religious belief are:

• Christian pharmacists refusing to do their jobs of filling prescriptions in the event the drug they are dispensing conflicts with their religious belief.
• Christian school board members who insist that creationism intelligent design be taught in schools as a legitimate science. (It’s not.)
• Christian politicians who insist that Congress swap out the Bill of Rights with the Ten Commandments.
• Muslim radicals who believe alcohol drinkers should be flogged and gays and lesbians be stoned to death.
• Fundamentalists who raise their children to believe that bullying another child is permissible if they believe that child is gay.

Their bullshit sob stories get played out over and over again, and these religious assholes continue to play the martyr every time a law is passed that gives equal rights or a ruling is made that challenges hate speech. They cry foul and hold up their holy books yelling out, “this is the law we should believe in!”

The people that piss me off are such a tiny minority, and yet they receive so much publicity that you’d think they were the only Christians that existed in America. It’s up to the rest of us to call these assholes on their bullshit.

I don't believe in angels, but I do believe in angles.

I had a lot of fun working on this illustration. I watched BSG, both the classic series and the new one, religiously. It was very bittersweet to see the final episodes of the series only last month. But now I can experience the show again through the magic of DVDs, and my illustration here.

Pale Blue Dot

This poster was really fun to work on. I cranked it out in only two days and I really like how it turned out. A co-worker of mine at the UO Outdoor Program commented on the flower, saying that he’d shot a photo of a desert flower that looked exactly like my graphic one here. (It had five petals instead of three.)

I based the flower on the traditional recycling logo. The sun and rays were a bit of inspiration though. I felt the design needed some zap, and the rays provided that while drawing attention to the flower.
