The bus to the Daley Center was running late as it pulled up to the curb. I waited at the bus stop next to a fella leaning against the sign with his head down and looking, well, kinda blue like he’d been waiting there forever. The driver opened the door and said that I could get on, but the “blue-skinned son of a bitch” behind me would have to walk. I stepped back and let the blue fella climb aboard before me, which pissed off the driver something fierce. The driver cursed and pulled away from the curb, knowing he was already running late, as the blue fella sat down at the front of the bus and nodded at me. Hopefully that meant “thanks.”

National Novel Writing Month 2009 is officially over. This year was my first attempt at the formidable goal of writing 50,000 words in 30 days, but I’m happy to report that I accomplished it and then some. My final word count for the month was 63,933. I beat the 50k goal by a 13,933 word margin. Not bad for my first year!
I’m also happy to report that I earned myself quite a few NaNoWriMo merit badges. Though I won’t be able to purchase a set, I’m proud to say that I earned:
- NaNo Socializing (Meeting with other NaNos on Halloween for a pep talk.)
- Caffeine Abuse (Energy drinks, black tea, maté.)
- Procrastination (This was not hard to earn.)
- Word-Count Padding (Um, ah, well, you know, heh.)
- NaNo Rally (5,000 words in a day)
- Creative Nonfiction (Remember that time when my character did the exact same thing as me when she was 12?)
- Eureka Moment (On 11/23, when I got my 5,000 word day, things finally started to come together for my novel.)
- NaNo Victory (50k? Ain’t no thang!)
I’ve still got about 10,000 more words to write before I’m finally done with my rough draft. So I’ll be working on that during the first two weeks of December. I’d like to have a finished draft done and printed by December 15th, so I can proudly stick it in a three-ring binder, stuff it on my bookshelf, and forget about it until March for National Novel Editing Month.
I’ve taken the plunge and survived. Am I a writer yet? Not until my novel is published and in your hot little hands.
Carpe Diem,
